Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” to be made into a TV series

His Dark Materials is soon to become the latest of dramas offered by BBC One.

The series of books have sold nearly 17.5 million copies worldwide and has been made into a stage production, graphic novel, audiobook, radio play and it’s even had fame as a Hollywood film, The Golden Compass, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Dakota Blue Richards in 2006.

The trilogy is focused on an orphan Lyra who lives in a parallel universe where science, magic and theology are inescapably connected and, sees the protagonist learn about her prophesied destiny as well as encounters with witches and armoured polar bears.

Pullman has said that he enjoys seeing his stories adapted into different forms, “In recent years we’ve seen how long stories on television, whether adaptations (Game of Thrones) or original (The SopranosThe Wire), can reach depths of characterisation and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel.”

The BBC hopes that it will be a “drama event for young and old – a real family treat”.

The TV series is set to be filmed and produced in Wales but no release date has been given.
