It’s the latest craze – food with a face!
For many, looking down at your plate and seeing something looking back at you may not be the most appealing, but a new trend is coming out of East Asia and it’s all about making food fun.
Named “character bento” and “chigiri-pan” (Japanese for “tear-away bread”) these rice balls, noodle plates and buns feature characters and faces that are meant to bring visual enjoyment as well as tasty satisfaction.
They’re part of what’s called kawaii (“cuteness”), a widespread theme in Japanese pop culture, and they’re becoming hugely popular on social media. The popular food is starting to trend on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
