Heathrow Airport have reported blockages to terminal 2 and 3 because of a protest from members of campaign group, ‘Plane Stupid’.
Five people were arrested at the Airport after the activists parked across the main road into Heathrow, blocking the inbound tunnel.
The activity was bound to cause delays and problems for both the airport and those travelling in the surrounding areas.
Heathrow reported the problems via social media by tweeting “Protest activity in the inbound tunnel is currently affecting traffic around the central terminal area and terminals 2 & 3”
Police arrived on scene at approximatly 8am, to a van displaying a banner “No ifs, no buts: no third runway ” blocking the tunnel.
Cameron Kaye from ‘Plane Stupid’ said that ” An Airport expansion would wreck the legally-binding Climate Change Act, risking wiping out 55% of species this century and displacing 75 million more people from their homes by 2035.
“If aviation growth isn’t reduced, by 2037 aviation alone could emit all of the carbon it’s safe for the UK to emit. The government needs to choose: build new runways or stop climate chaos: it’s that simple.”
Members of the public, Heathrow, and the activist group all took to twitter to comment on the activity.
“@HeathrowAirport protest activity in the inbound tunnel is currently affecting traffic around the central terminal area and terminals 2 & 3 at Heathrow.”
“@PeteKalhan @HeathrowAirport very very long delays. tunnel blocked. Some passengers leaving taxis and starting to walk. Fortunately I’m leaving airport.”
“@HeathrowAirport@BBCTravelAlert The tunnel is still being cleared however we are still advising people to use alternative routes at the moment.”
Police also advised the public of extra delays due to the situation.
